1999 Mohawk Photos IV

Welcome to New Jersey's newest dive boat for deep exploration, the Depth Charge!  The Depth Charge is a 42-foot Provincial, custom built to salvage the RMS Republic and other cool wrecks!

The following pictures (all images from video) are from the voyage of the Depth Charge to the 387- foot long passenger liner SS Mohawk, Friday, December 31, 1999.  The SS Mohawk sank in 1935 in a collision with the freighter Talisman, eight miles east of Manasquan Inlet, New Jersey.  (Continued)

Huge holes in the deck of the SS Mohawk.  There are sure to be many good digging spots down inside.
The entrance to our favorite digging hole, a tunnel that goes into a part of what once was the ship's hold.  There are is a lot of wood laying around from the crates we've been breaking open this year.  All this stuff needs to be periodically cleaned out so we can continue unearthing more stacked crates.
Bill Cleary sizes up the situation inside the hole.  This picture is very dark, the bright spot is the reflection of my light on his mask.  Once digging begins, visibility goes to zero.
Exiting the hole.  This large, round, steel beam at the hole's entrance holds up a huge piece of the wreck.
Aquanaut Bill Cleary heads back up the anchor line.
Joe Mazraani and Christina Young show off a bag full of nice, brass safety razors back at the dock (for a close-up of what they look like, see Mohawk Photos II).  Petie Wohlleben took this shot.
Gene Holmes (top, middle) and some redneck hick barge into the picture, and wish you a very happy New Year, and great diving throughout the new millennium!
