The SS Carolina was a 380 foot long passenger liner sunk in WWI by the U-151 on "Black Sunday", June 2, 1918, along with five other ships, including the freighter Texel and collier Winneconne.  The wreck was discovered and dived in 1995 after extensive research by John Chatterton and John Yurga.  The Carolina lies in 250 feet of water approximately 65 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

For additional information on the background about the SS Carolina, please consult the Seeker's Carolina page.

The following pictures (all images from video) are from the voyage of the Depth Charge to the SS Carolina, Saturday and Sunday, September 8-9, 2001 (continued from Page V).

Richie Kohler descends to the wreck as I do my deco.  Wait a second..... Richie Kohler?  He wasn't on the boat!  Yep, the Depth Charge's sister ship, the Independence pulled up while we were doing our dive.
Looking up as more of the Independence gang descends.
Here's Frankie Pellegrino with his headlight.  The light has not come on yet.  ;-)
I'm still doing my deco when George Place ascends to do his.  This is George's first dive on the Carolina.
Enrique Alvarez (right) passes us during his descent.
George got this small, brass deadlight, that he found loose near the tie-in point.
Frankie got the toilet seat you see here (in his goodie bag next to his flipper).  The first class areas had toilets, while the other classes had to do with chamber pots.
I assist John Chatterton (left) and Petey Wohlleben (right) suit up for their next dive.  Photo taken from the Independence by Dan Bartone.

After we're all back up, the mighty Depth Charge pulls out and we wave goodbye to the Independence, which ties up to the mooring.  It's cool to meet with your friends and have a party this far offshore on a hot summer day!

Late in the afternoon we pull back into Brielle.  Here is a close-up of the brass wall lamp that I got.  I will restore it to like-new condition and replace the long-gone ornate globe.

I hope you've enjoyed all of our 2001 offshore expeditions!  Stay tuned for more cool expeditions coming in 2002....
