Welcome to New Jersey's fastest dive boat for deep exploration, the Depth Charge! The Depth Charge is a 42-foot Provincial, custom built to salvage the RMS Republic and other cool wrecks!
The following pictures (all images from video) are from the voyage of the Depth Charge to the 412- foot long freighter Arundo, Sunday, May 14, 2000. The Arundo was sunk in 1942, torpedoed by the German U-boat U-136. She is 130 feet deep, on the edge of the New Jersey Mud Hole. Tires and severely corroded trucks, part of her wartime cargo, are all over the place.
Bill Cleary is in a good mood today as we leave the dock at Clark's Landing, Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Today we have a light crew, just the three of us to the Arundo - Bill Cleary, Joe Mazraani, and myself (Christina). The forecast was for a cold front to move through and the seas to be snotty, but it was wrong once again.
It turns out that Billy is up to no good. He decides to take the Seeker hostage!
Seeker mate Terry Martzall comes running out, begging and pleading!
But Billy is also feeling merciful today... he decides to let the Seeker go...
We continue on our way out, and pass the Sea Inn at dock. Doesn't anyone want to go diving anymore on a beautiful day like this??!!
Joe Mazraani pilots the Depth Charge to the Arundo. Joe is one of the most talented divers I've ever met.
Joe Mazraani prepares to gear up to go set the hook when we arrive on the site.
This is our tie-in point on the Arundo. As you can see, visibility was excellent today, probably around 40 feet!
The wreck was blown and wire dragged, but there are still many large pieces sticking up, and it is huge! We are in the stern area.
The Arundo is covered with large anemones, and is filled with lobsters.
Looking up at one of the blades of the giant bronze prop.
Looking down at the huge prop. I hope you have enjoyed these pictures as much as I did taking them! |
